Alfalfa
is considered as the best animal feed source, it has excellent nutritional values such as:
- High protein content. Unlike meat flour,
alfalfa provides a great amount of vegetal protein. This aspect will benefit
animals health, as well as people's. Alfalfa is considered to be the great
green alternative for animal feeding.
- High content of other nutritional elements as for example: nitrogen,
phosphorus, potassium, calcium, boron, sulfur, molybdenum, magnesium...
- High fibre concentration: Fibre contribution to animal feeding depends on the particles' size of the supplied products.
Fibre components can be easily fermented by bacteria in rumen and large intestine of ruminant animals. In general, this fact allows animals to have high digestibility.
Dehydrated alfalfa
Compared to sun drying
process, alfalfa dehydration reduces nutritional wastes (leaves, protein,
vitamins) and prevents microbiotic contamination due to exposure to rain, dew or
soil condition.
Alfalfa contains around 50% of cellular walls and balanced composition of fiber
(9% of pectin, 11% of hemicelluloses, 24% of cellulose and 5% of lignin).
Therefore, it guarantees fast digestive passage, relevant supply of soluble
fiber and high tampon capability. These factors, together with its high
palatability, make alfalfa become a critical ingredient in cattle feeding.
Alfalfa, as other leguminous plants, contains anti-nutritional factors, among which saponines and soluble tannins are the most important.
Alfalfa also contains estrogens, which can bring about female fetal losses if it is consumed in hay format. However, by dehydration thermal treatment, anti-nutritional factors are eliminated.
Crude protein content highly determines alfalfa value in the market. The earlier it is harvested, the lower the dry matter production per hectar is, and the higher the nutritional value is, since the proportion of leaves per stem is at its peak.
Alfalfa is an excellent
source of macrominerals (calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, clore),
microminerals (zinc, copper, iron), vitamins (liposoluble and B group components)
and carotene.
